When you first see Bahia de los Angeles, with its picturesque islands floating in azure waters, you'll see why it is considered one of the most beautiful settings of the Baja Peninsula. In June 2007, the Mexican government declared this bay and surrounding waters of the Sea of Cortez a protected marine park. Known for its prolific marine life - whales, dolphins, sea lions, whale sharks, sea turtles, and sea birds, this area has been referred to as the "Yellowstone" of Mexico.

Enchanting Islands of The Sea of CortezWe will explore the bay, coves, estuaries, desert and islands during our stay at the La Unica Nature Reserve situated in a peaceful cove just 10 miles south of town. Owners of this pristine two-mile beach made history when they placed their land into a conservation easement. Baja and Beyond is proud to be working with La Unica by offering environmentally sustainable programs to help protect this magnificent area for future generations.

Features Included: • Two nights hotel accommodations • Three nights accommodations at La Unica • All meals at La Unica (11 ~ as noted below) • All boating transfers and excursions • Mexican permits and Tourist Cards • Experienced Baja naturalists and guides. • Small groups to assure a more personalized experience.

OCTOBER 13: SAN DIEGO - CATAVIÑA - We'll leave early morning, cross the U.S./Mexico border into Tijuana and travel along the scenic Pacific coast to Ensenada. Then continue past Baja's premier wine producing regions and the rich agricultural areas of San Quintin. Then travel through the lush Central Desert with its forests of cardon cactus and the unique cirio plant. Stay tonight at the Desert Inn Hotel in CataviƱa, surrounded by giant granite boulders, nestled in the heart of the desert.

Enchanting Islands of The Sea of CortezOCTOBER 14: CATAVIÑA - LA UNICA NATURE RESERVE - Today we'll continue our drive through the rich natural beauty of the Valle de los Cirios, an area protected by the Mexican government. We'll arrive at Bahia de los Angeles mid-morning, then board a 28-foot "panga" Mexican fishing boat, for our 40-minute excursion to La Unica... a very special and unique place. La Unica is situated on a wide white sandy beach in a two mile cove, framed by desert mountains and the emerald waters of the Sea of Cortez ~ an unspoiled oasis! This unique experience offers quaint palm thatched "casitas" equipped with very large comfortable beds with freshly laundered linens, and a personal bathroom with a solar shower. After lunch and camp orientation, you are free to explore, use a kayak or swing in your hammock and take in the view. Dinner conversation about the activities in the days to come. (L,D)

DAYS OCTOBER 15-16 - LA UNICA NATURE RESERVE - Awaken to a spectacular sunrise with a view of Pescador Island, just offshore. Each morning after breakfast we'll begin our exploration of the area by boat, searching for dolphins, whales, sea birds, sea lions and maybe a whale shark or two. Activities in the afternoon include kayaking, "fun" fishing, hiking ... or just relax along the water's edge and let the bay lap at your toes. We'll enjoy delicious food in the main open-air dining palapa. At night, settle in and watch the pink and purple hues of the sunset transform into a canopy of stars. (B,L,D ~ both days)

Enchanting Islands of The Sea of CortezOCTOBER 17:
LA UNICA NATURE RESERVE - SAN QUINTIN - After an early morning breakfast and a walk along the beach, we'll boat back to town and visit the excellent natural history museum. Following lunch, we'll drive north to San Quintin. Once at the San Quintin Desert Inn, you can relax or take a stroll along the expansive and isolated seven-mile Pacific Ocean beach, covered with sand dollars.

OCTOBER 18: SAN QUINTIN - SAN DIEGO - Continue north with a quick lunch stop in Ensenada, arriving in San Diego mid-to-late afternoon.
