Join award-winning Baja author and explorer Graham Mackintosh on an adventure to the legendary Sea of Cortez. Caravan with other Discover Baja members to beautiful Bahia de los Angeles, recently declared a biosphere reserve.
On this exclusive Discover Baja trip, Graham will regale us with tales about his two-month stay on nearby Guardian Angel Island, as written about in his
latest book, "Marooned with Very Little Beer." During our stay at the La Unica Nature Reserve, just 10 miles southeast of Bahia, we'll explore islands and coves as we look for whales, dolphins, sea lions, whale sharks, and birds. We'll venture out to Guardian Angel Island to visit Graham's former campsite.
 Hike with Graham and soak in the breathtaking views of the Sea of Cortez from the surrounding desert and hills. Then, snorkel, kayak or relax in your hammock and let the soft breeze lull you to sleep.

MAY 17: SAN DIEGO - CATAVIÑA -
We'll leave early morning, cross the U.S./Mexico border into Tijuana and travel along the scenic Pacific coast to Ensenada. Then continue past Baja's premier wine producing regions and the rich agricultural areas of San Quintin. Then travel through the lush Central Desert with its forests of cardon cactus and the unique cirio plant. Stay tonight at the Desert Inn Hotel in Cataviña, surrounded by giant granite boulders, nestled in the heart of the desert.
 MAY 18: CATAVIÑA - LA UNICA NATURE RESERVE - Today we'll continue our drive through the rich natural beauty of the Valle de los Cirios, an area protected by the Mexican government. We'll arrive at Bahia de los Angeles mid-morning, then board a 28-foot "panga" Mexican fishing boat, for our 40-minute excursion to La Unica... a very special and unique place. La Unica is situated on a wide white sandy beach in a two mile cove, framed by desert mountains and the emerald waters of the Sea of Cortez ~ an unspoiled oasis! This unique experience offers quaint palm thatched "casitas" equipped with very large comfortable beds with freshly laundered linens, and a personal bathroom with a solar shower. After lunch and camp orientation, you are free to explore, kayak or swing in your hammock and take in the view.
MAY 19-20 - LA UNICA NATURE RESERVE - Awaken to a spectacular sunrise with a view of Pescador Island, just offshore. Each morning after breakfast we'll begin our exploration of the area by boat, searching for dolphins, whales, sea birds, sea lions and maybe a whale shark or two. Activities in the afternoon include kayaking, "fun" fishing, snorkeling, hiking ... or just relax along the water's edge and let the bay lap at your toes. We'll enjoy delicious food in the main open-air dining palapa. At night, settle in and watch the pink and purple hues of the sunset transform into a canopy of stars.
 MAY 21: LA UNICA NATURE RESERVE - SAN QUINTIN - After an early morning breakfast and a final swim or walk along the beach, we'll boat back to town and visit the excellent natural history museum. Following lunch, we'll drive north to San Quintin. Once at the San Quintin Desert Inn, you can relax or take a stroll along the expansive and isolated seven-mile Pacific Ocean beach, covered with sand dollars.
MAY 22: SAN QUINTIN - SAN DIEGO - Continue north with a quick lunch stop in Ensenada, arriving in San Diego mid-to-late afternoon.
 NOTE: Those who plan to fly to San Diego for this trip, please contact Baja and Beyond Tours PRIOR to making airline reservations to ensure the quota has been met on your specified trip. If quotas are not met, the trip may be cancelled.
